I Can’t Drive 55!

I love cars.  Always have, always will.  I have been continually fascinated with their design, both inside and out, and have spent countless hours dreaming of what my next car purchase will be.  I’ve owned 9 cars in my very short driving career, and while I plan on keeping my 2007 Acura TL for a while longer, my interest in cars has not waned.

Cars are, quite simply, one of the best inventions of mankind.  Think on it.  Even the most utilitarian of cars allows us our autonomy, providing a means by which we can travel anywhere we want to go, so long as there are roads and we have money for gas.  And maybe some time off from work.

But the best of these magnificent creations combine their stunning beauty with sleek, powerful, impressive engines, and finish off with luxurious interiors.

My current dream car is this:

Look at her.  The Aston Martin DB9.  The grill says “Come and get me”.  The body is sleek and pure.  The rims are pure terror.  And underneath that divine exterior sits a 510HP, V12 and enough torque to rip your head off if you don’t know how to drive her.

Now the saddest thing about this beautiful car is that I’ll never own one.

The second saddest thing is that I live in an area where there are people who do own one and I’m not dating any of those people.

What’s weird is that I live in a city, but it’s not what I would consider a terribly large city, more medium-sized.  We’re lucky that we’ve got several well-known colleges nearby as well as established businesses and both draw large numbers of highly-educated people from all over the world.  I never expected this place to generate an environment where I’d actually have to worry about what I’d do if I crashed into one of these $100,000+ cars but it has.

Now as a car lover it’s my advantage that this place has turned out to produce some very wealthy people.   It gives me an opportunity to be as close as I ever will be to these supercars.  I see quite a number of Maseratis about town…there are several black ones, a dark blue, and a bright blue one.  Not that I keep count.  Or take pictures at stop lights.

Maseratis are very nice and stylish, but I think nothing will ever compare to my love of the Aston.

I’ve seen a couple of Ferraris too.  One remarkably similar to this.

My brother-in-law recently went to an air show in the area and took a picture of “some cars” there.  He was excited to show me the pictures of the planes, but I was more excited about the singular picture he’d taken of a Zonda and a Ferrari (well, mostly exited about the Zonda).  Most shockingly, my brother-in-law, who likes cars as much as I do, didn’t know what a Zonda was.

She’s a car you’ll never miss because of her ears.  She’s beautiful, unique, and deadly fast.  She was made for a race track and it shows.

Like I said though, I currently have an Acura TL.  An old one at that.

In my mind’s eye, she’s just as pretty as the Aston, albeit a tad slower and maybe not as enthralling once you’re behind the wheel.

But she’s nimble and quick enough and I like her.  And she likes me.  We’ve had a good relationship so far.  Her 290HP, V6 gets me where I need to go and she’s not given me any problems.  And she’s paid for…so all-in-all, no complaints!

So I guess I’ll keep dreaming about these beautiful cars and continue to appreciate the freedom the one I have gives me.

And maybe one day, if I’m very, very lucky, I’ll own an Aston of my own.
